SHANGHAI — In the largest audio deal of the year, Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) has agreed to acquire podcast platform Ximalaya for $2.4 billion. The acquisition combines China's largest music streaming service with its dominant spoken-word audio platform, creating a digital media juggernaut with unrivaled reach.

Ximalaya, which reported 303 million monthly active users in 2023, provides TME with a massive library of audiobooks, podcasts, and educational content. The deal structure includes $1.26 billion in cash, with the remainder in stock. Analysts view the move as a defensive consolidation, allowing TME to diversify its revenue streams beyond music streaming and live karaoke, while securing a dominant position in the "ear economy" against competitors like ByteDance.
