WASHINGTON — The Washington Post has unveiled a new AI-powered audio feature, "Your Personal Podcast," designed to generate customized news briefings for subscribers based on their reading history. The tool, which launched in beta this month, utilizes large language models (LLMs) to convert written articles into audio scripts, which are then voiced by synthetic "hosts."

The initiative represents a significant step in the personalization of news delivery, allowing users to swap host personas and adjust the topic mix with a click. However, the rollout has sparked debate within the organization. The Washington Post Guild has raised concerns regarding the accuracy standards applied to AI-generated content, questioning why the technology would be held to a "lower standard" than human reporters.

In response, the Post has included a disclaimer advising listeners to "verify information" by checking the audio against the original source text. The newspaper states that a secondary LLM is employed specifically to vet scripts for accuracy before they are synthesized.
